Once we'd got the water out of the bilges of Audrey, powder monkey found a ships bell, "MS BREMEN 1911" in the bilge, it's very tarnished and I wondered if any of you out there had a certain trick/tips you could pass on to me when it comes to cleaning it?

Apart from giving it the kids to do as a punishment duty

Thanks

salt and vinegar

powerful stuff though, left too long and it will start to alter the makeup of the alloy. on the surface at least, and you end up with the brass a more salmony pink colour than an, err, brassy colour

make a sloppy paste of salt and vinegar, bit of fag ash helps a lot as well (honest, I'm not making this up), brush it on and leave for a few minutes then clean off and have a go with Astonish Orange kitchen cleaner pastey stuff then hit it with the brasso

if it's not shifting stick some more vinegar stuff on

if your really lazy (like me) buy a couple of litres of cheap malt vinegar, stick it in big bowl and just sit the bell in it, a bit at at time if its a really big bell, left out every few minutes to see how its going

coca cola can work well also, and also has a bizzare effect on stubborn boat nails - honest, try it

Issy you're breaking my heart

But only a little bit,

Not enough to let you have the bell though,

But if you're good, when Audrey gets afloat, i'll let you call the watch changes with it :approval::laie_67:
